In Philippines Volcano Mayon set to erupt

Philippine experts announced on Monday that Volcano Mayon in the Philippines is set to erupt any day now.

Some 120,000 people living in the eight-kilometre danger zone have been evacuated, says Elizabeth Byrs of the UN humanitarian agency, OCHA, and contingency plans were prepared in advance.

"Several agencies such as the United Nations Children's Fund and the World Food Programme had already prepared their plans and pre-positioned assistance. The International Organization for Migration has also already sent a team to the nearby town of Albay. Everything was well under control."

UNICEF has provided water kits to ensure clean and safe water, medical supplies, and temporary school tents and classroom materials for the 24,000 students who have been displaced.

For the moment, all the signs point to an impending eruption of Mayon but no one can say exactly when. The last eruption from Mayon was in 2006 and lasted for two months,

The Philippines have poor rural areas without access to education, leaving much of the population trapped in their lives as subsistence farmers. Other issues in the Philippines are a high risk of illness from infectious food or waterborne diseases. This, combined with a lack of opportunity, creates an unequal distribution of income.

Poverty creates a culture of silence. A culture where women, children and men struggle tojoin together, organize, speak out and develop solutions to their problems.

Each family has their own dreams and plans for a strong future. But poverty demoralizes and puts families at risk. Lack of dignity, little confidence and no belief in their own abilities are the most debilitating aspects of poverty, creating hopelessness, isolation and resignation.

Families living in poverty are affected disproportionately by devastation to the environment. Lack of infrastructure to deal with deadly storms and flooding, poor sanitation and basic agricultural methods, all contribute to unsustainable environments in developing countries.
One of the things that children and families in poor communities know about is waiting. Waiting for opportunities; waiting for healthy, productive lives.
